His wife, Theodora, convinced him to give more rights to women. She also helped keep Justinian on the throne by telling to sty and fight when an uprising occurred.

Justinian and other emperors supported artists and architects. They ordered the building of churches, forts, and public buildings throughout the empire. Over 1,00 churches were in Constantinople but the greatest was Hagia Sophia. Inside were marble walls, mosaics, colored glass and stone, and figures of saints.
